Asia Cup

Asian Cricket Council was established in 1983 to enhance mutual relations and cricket ties between Asian countries. After the establishment of ACC, it was decided that for good cricket in Asia, Asia Cup would be played every 2 years, whose format would be ODI, and teams from Asia would participate. The first edition of the Asia Cup was played in 1984 in which 3 teams participated India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka and we got the first Asia Cup winner as India. India is the first winner of the Asia Cup in 1984.

In 2009 the ACC ensured that the Asia Cup would be played every two years from 2009 onwards and the ICC decided that matches played in the Asia Cup would be given official ODI status.

Following the reduction in the size of the Asian Cricket Council in 2015, the ICC has announced that the cup will be played alternately in ODI and T20I formats from 2016, As a result of which the Asia Cup was played in T20I format for the first time in 2016.

India has participated in 13 seasons of the Asia Cup as of 2018 and is on top with 7 wins while Sri Lanka is second with five wins. If we talk about Pakistan, then Pakistan has also raised its flag twice. India is the only country that has been the title winner in both the formats(ODI & T20I) of the Asia Cup.

The 15th season of the Asia Cup is to be played in Sri Lanka, but in view of the political situation there, the Asia Cup 2022 can be shifted to the UAE, and the 16th edition of the Asia Cup will be played in Pakistan in 2023.

Asia Cup History Cricket

The first season of the Asia Cup was played in 1984 in Shahjahan UAE, at that time 3 teams participated in Asia Cup, India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. The first match of the Asia Cup was played between Pakistan and Sri Lanka. India and Sri Lanka had played the first final of the first Asia Cup and India won the first Asia Cup.

The second edition of the Asia Cup was played in Sri Lanka in 1986, in which a new team Bangladesh also took part, in this edition India did not participate due to poor cricket relations with Sri Lanka. The winner of the 1986 Asia Cup was Sri Lanka.

The third edition of the Asia Cup was played in 1988 and was organized by Bangladesh and its winner was India.

The fourth edition of the Asia Cup was played in India in 1990-91, in which Pakistan distanced itself due to poor political relations with India, the winner of the fourth edition of the Asia Cup was also India.

The fifth edition of the Asia Cup was played in the UAE in 1995 where India once again raised their flag and brought the Asia Cup home for the third time in a row.

The sixth edition of the Asia Cup was played in 1997 which was organized by Sri Lanka and Sri Lanka once again emerged victorious at home.

The seventh edition of the Asia Cup was played in Bangladesh in 2000, and a new team Pakistan won the Asia Cup title for the first time.

The eighth edition of the Asia Cup was played in 2004 and was organized by Sri Lanka. Two new teams were added in this season, UAE and Hong Kong, making the tournament eight teams, the winner of this season was Sri Lanka, and Sri Lanka won the trophy for the third time. And this was Sri Lanka’s third victory in his own country.
